This book traces Beckmann’s last summer in California from Los Angeles through Carmel to the north, the Bay Area around San Francisco. Memories of the past and impressions of the present are reflected in his letters, diary entries and paintings of this period. The late triptych Beginning (Childhood) is identified as a key work in his biography.
